2017 is going to be the year of foldable devices, with biggies like Samsung, LG and Nokia launching their own flexible range of devices. Needless to say, Microsoft decided to follow into their footsteps. Unlike Google, Apple or Samsung, Microsoft has always maintained a low profile when it comes to launching its new gadgets in the market. Nevertheless, this time, there were speculations regarding Microsoft foldable surface phone that could rival the likes of Pixel XL and iPhone.
Back in 2016, the company filed a patent in the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) for a ‘mobile computing gadget with a flexible hinge structure’. The developers were basically working on a foldable phone cum tabled device with a smartphone-sized screen.
The idea was to use it as a tablet for browsing, reading and watching movies. At the same time, users can also fold it into a smaller device for calling or texting purpose. The device can also be used for browsing social media and editing e-books in the full-length version. When kept in the ‘tent mode’, we can watch movies and videos on it. Sounds practical, isn’t it?
This January, the efforts of Microsoft developers showed colors as the USPTO granted their request. The upcoming Microsoft foldable surface phone is rumored to be more flexible than its counterparts. Its housings support a variety of different shapes and usage scenarios.
For instance, when laid flat on a surface, it serves as a display device. When one of the many housings are stacked behind one another, it serves as a smartphone. When not in use, it can be folded and kept in a ‘closed’ configuration. Kabir Siddiqui, who holds the patents for surface camera and surface kickstand is credited with the invention of the upcoming Microsoft foldable surface phone.
As per rumors, this brand new smartphone will come in three variants, based on storage, processor and other features. Currently, the employees are busy working on this cutting-edge technology. We don’t know the exact details about the product, except that it’s expected to hit the markets by the year end.
Wow! Now this has definitely set high standards for other smartphone companies. We’re expecting a tough competition in the near future.
