Comparing The Apple App Store And Google Play Store – Is Open Source Better Than A Closed Platform?
The Apple App Store and The Google Play Store are two of the most important application stores in the world today.
These market places host the best applications of both the iOS and the Android operating systems.
However, both these app stores have many good and bad aspects that should be considered before branding both these stores as good or bad.
Apple’s app store has a lot of applications, but not as much as its counterpart, the Google Play Store.
Not every app can make its way into the Apple App store.
The criterion for being let in is rather very high and the app is generally put through the gauntlet where it comes into strict scrutiny by a human being. If he approves it, the app moves into the store or it is rejected.
The Google Play Store on the Other hand will let almost everything pass through unless it is considered as malicious or harmful to a user’s device.
Since Google allows this, the number of apps available in the play store is generally the highest as compared to any other app store.
The people have free access to developmental tools and others like emulators, downloaders, file launchers and many other apps that have been a complete no –no for the ios platform.
Today, the number of users in the Android sector is the highest, the reason being that this operating system has a lot more to offer than the iOS does.
The application market place is teeming with apps and users are allowed to use it freely.
The Open nature of the Operating system is what has endeared it to many users. Customizations and tweaks are done easily, further allowing people to make better use of their devices.
Many third party software providers have made the market place an even better place.on the other hand, the iOS is not an open platform. You cannot tweak or change it in anyway and no third party app maker make an app for iOS without being put through the OS.
This is advantageous, as security issues, clones and rip off apps do not bother the OS users at all. Every app is so well checked than no scams can even make it through the initial phase of the app testing.
This is not the case for Google Play Store.
However with the passage of time, both companies have realized the need of being neither too closed nor too open.
While Apple is slowly making way towards a more open OS, Google is slowly becoming less open so as to cleanse its app system.
