Chrome 57 To Throttle Background Tabs To Conserve Power

Mar 15, 2017 By

Google Chrome has been one of the most popular web browsers right since the day it came out. Remember the days when Chrome was an invite-only service? From there to being the most popular browser in the world with billions of people using it, Chrome has come a long way. The browser offers the users with the latest security as well as regular improvements. The latest update that comes with Chrome 57 is that of improving power consumption by throttling background tabs.

What makes Google Chrome really special is the fact that Google keeps bringing forward continuous updates for the users. This time, the company is focusing on the power consumption. It is a well known fact that the more processes you run, the more power your PC consumes. While this might not bother the traditional desktop users much, but those on laptop, tablets and mobiles want the most out of their battery life. The Chrome 57 update will now throttle tabs to ensure they consume less power.

Chrome has made some changes to their throttling policies, and as a result they say that they will now ensure less power is consumed by background tabs. Google comments that tabs with audio playback going on, or with live streams running will not be affected by this. This is achieved with the help of Chrome’s new and improved page visibility API which checks tabs for inactivity every ten seconds. Chrome 57 helps conserve power in a 25% better manner.

While this Chrome 57 feature will ensure that the battery life is not hampered because a user opens multiple tabs, the upcoming versions of Chrome will focus more on the memory consumption. Chrome 57 is about power conservation, and Chrome 58 to Chrome 60 are likely to be about memory conservation. Chrome has been known to be rather harsh on the RAM. However, with the next few updates, this issue is going to be addressed.

Feb 10, 2017 By

Google is among the biggest names when it comes to the world of technology. The company has been around for quite a long while, and has been bringing forward numerous innovations in the way we know the markets to operate. Google’s latest update brings out numerous, much needed changes in the Chrome OS with the Chrome OS 56 update. Let us take a look at what’s new in this OS update from Google:

Chrome OS 56

What’s New in Chrome OS 56

  • Design Changes: The Chrome OS 56 update brings the Chrome OS at par with the design style that Google has been following with their Android OS as well as the Android Wear OS. Over the past few years this has been the standard Google design. The latest update to the Chrome OS improves various elements in this Operating System. Icons are now rounder and many new animations have been improved.
  • Updates for the Visually Impaired: The ChromeVox Screen Reader gets a large number of updates following the arrival of Chrome OS 56. Visually impaired readers can now control the OS in a better manner using only voice commands and audio prompts.  In addition to this, the braille display keyboards have also been innovated to provide the visually impaired users with a better experience. For those not comfortable with these new updates, ChromeVox Classic is still an option.

Google Play Store Support

However, more Chromebooks are expected to get the update at the Google I/O 2017 event later in May. The Chrome OS 56 update is now out for all the Chromebook devices other than the ASUS Chromebook Flip, Acer Chromebook R11 and the 2015 Chromebook Pixel.

Google Chrome turns to HTML5 for Most Websites

Google Chrome 55 to Fix Existing Vulnerabilities and Block Flash Based Analytics…

Goole Chrome 55 allows access to a variety of download features that let you view offline videos, images and web pages.
Google Chrome 55 allows access to a variety of download features that let you view offline videos, images and web pages.

Yes, you heard it right, the rumors are true. The Adobe Flash plugin will no longer be available on updated Google Chrome. Chrome 55 as we call it, will prioritize HTML5 for most web pages. Why? Because this media software was really annoying. Flash was known for causing system vulnerabilities a number of times. Probably that’s why the developers launched Google Chrome 55 for Linux, Mac and Windows OS computers.

Why Google Chrome 55 is Better?

Chrome 55.0.2883.75 is furnished with better features. They’ve identified 26 patches, 10 security fixtures and CSS automatic hyphenation. If you use Chrome 55 for MacOS, you can hyphenate words, which definitely improves the aesthetics of text blocks.

In case of Android, this newer update allows access to a variety of download features that let you view offline videos, images and web pages. That’s actually cool.

Earlier, Google users had the option to block Flash plugin by accessing the ‘Settings’ menu. They could reactivate the plugin as and when required. However, webmasters have favored HTML5 over Flash because it loads faster. They’ve been testing a beta version for long and thus, they’ve come with Chrome 55. It’s more efficient, safer and power-savvy.

It is available on most shopping sites including Amazon.

How can You Upgrade it to the Newest Version?

You can easily update your earlier browser to Google Chrome 55 by clicking on the ‘3 vertical dots or lines’ icon available on your browser tab. Hit the icon to access the ‘About’ section. Search for the update option then download the update. Once it’s installed, you can relaunch the browser to get it running.

In a way, Google surely knows how to stay in limelight. Not long ago, the company had collaborated with Microsoft to launch Office 365 in their Chromebook. Then there was Pixel XL and now Chrome 55. In future, they’ll be giving Apple, Mozilla and other companies a run for their money if they continue roping in new innovations all the time.

Apple Mac Users Targeted By Google Adwords Malvertising Campaign

Nov 20, 2016 By

The Apple Mac owners might have been the subject of an infection in their Google search engine by false ads at the very top of their search results in the recent weeks. This happened after the attackers successfully launched a campaign of malvertising against the Google Adwords. In a cheeky move the lure of choice for the attackers was a false ad for the Google’s very own, Google Chrome. Cylance security researcher, Jeffrey Tang is the man who first spotted this while he was looking for a Chrome downloader for his girlfriend. He did not believe that anyone would have the guts to do that to Google’s own page.

google-adwords-used-as-a-malvertising-delivery-platform-493128-2

There was a similar incident last year which was discovered by Malwarebytes in which the malvertisers paid legitimately for the popular keywords so that their ads would pop at the top of the search engine. Last year the keyword was “youtube” and this time around it is “google chrome”. Tang clicked on the ad which he knows was “mindless” but the ad itself was showing the url of www.google.com/chrome. Then Tang described in his blog that “clicking on the ad takes a user to www(dot)entrack(dot)space and then redirects the user to googlechromelive(dot)com – a page offering a free download of Google Chrome.”

The “Chrome” download link took the Windows users to a particular page that shows an error message but the Mac users are directed towards a various domains and in the end infected with a malicious installer for OSX: OSX/InstallMiez, which is also known as OSX/InstallCore. Tang says he believes that the attackers were mere middle men who were paid per install of the malware. He believes that for Windows users it might not be up yet that must be a reason why Windows users are not infected yet. In the end he says it absolutely blows his mind that even in 2016 this kind of mischievous behavior is still allowed.
